Location - West Oak Hotel, Adelaide

The dotnet meetup! It’s the meetup I favour the most in Adelaide. It’s held once every two months and the venue is the West Oak Hotel.

Usually the meetup is held at Adelaide University’s west campus, and this hotel was the place people went afterwards when they wanted to grab a beer and catch-up, but I never went along because of work the next day.

But this time the venue was set at this hotel from the start, and I heard they’d prepared a new format, quiz night, so I went along! (Honestly the pub felt unfamiliar so that was part of why I’d hesitated to go before too, lol. It was also my first quiz night)

Arriving at the meetup

Unfortunately I didn’t take a photo when I arrived. As always at a meetup, the organisers greet you warmly and the first thing is sticking a name tag on your chest to check in.

For a light 15 minutes or so, you end up busily discussing common ground or differences of opinion with a stranger (in other words, someone you’re about to know), and then the quiz starts. That day we talked about why Spring Boot and dotnet are different, lol. I brought up such a serious topic from the very first meeting, but I really wanted to have that conversation. It’s hard to find a place for this kind of nerdy talk outside a meetup.

Quiz starts

Before the event it started simply with an introduction to the event and the sponsors. That day too there was Encode Talent (a sponsor that’s at every tech meetup, Simon also always takes part in person), and Prateek from GUESTPIX was there as a sponsor as well. These sponsors funded the venue hire and the quiz prizes and so on.

The quiz had questions on general knowledge, development, databases, dotnet, famous figures in Computer Science, and more. Pretty much the kind of questions any developer would scratch their head over and love came pouring out..

Above all..

I came third!! Even though I haven’t been doing dotnet for that long, thanks to some lucky guessing I won a prize I got a dotnet10 diary and a passport case. I’m honoured to receive such a prize 😁.

It’s a diary that even has a wireless charging stand, no less, and the texture is nice too.

It’s a proud piece of goods that’s also good for showing off while carrying it around.
